a crack in the door filled with light

“In this wasteland where I’m living, there is a crack in the door filled with light…” – Needtobreathe, Wasteland

I woke up this morning and this is the first thing I saw. Now, I didn’t quite see it clearly because I’m legally blind. No, really… I wear contacts, and my left eye is -8.50 and my right eye is -9.50. If you know anything about prescription numbers, then you know that I am blind. Legally blind to be exact.

Nonetheless, I opened my eyes in this morning, and there was something about the way the light was peeking out from behind my curtains that caught my eye, that made me pause, that brought those lyrics to my head.

Funny thing is I have blackout curtains. They are supposed to “black out” all the light, to keep it from coming inside, to keep it from filling my room. These blackout curtains are supposed to keep the light from causing me to open my eyes before I want to wake up. Yet, still the light gets through.

This past week has been a bit rough. I have been a bit overwhelmed with wedding planning. And I have had quite the seasonal cold. I have just felt a little “blah.” I woke up this morning at 4am with a pounding headache, popped some Tylenol, and dreaded yet another day of this sickness. But when my eyes opened at 7:03am, I saw this image…

This sweet reminder that God is here (Matt. 28:20), that He is by my side (Isaiah 41:10), that His mercy is new each morning when I continue to fall short daily (Lamentations 3:22-23). I felt Him reminding me through this beautiful image and these applicable lyrics that His light is more powerful than any darkness in my life, than any “blackout curtain” of this world that attempts to block His goodness and love. He is stronger than any sickness, more peaceful than any stress, more powerful than any darkness, and more vibrant than any lack of sight.

The rest of those Needtobreathe lyrics go like this:

“In this wasteland where I’m living, there is a crack in the door filled with light, and it’s all that I need to get by… and it’s all that I need to shine.”

Are you feeling like you are in a wasteland today? Are you facing a “closed door” of health, career, finances, or relationships? Is there a crack in the door where you can see His light shining through? Are you able to open up your eyes to see it? To see Him? I promise you, He is waiting. I promise you, He is watching. I promise you, He is there. And He’s all you need to shine.

“Wake on up from your slumber. Baby, open up your eyes.” – Needtobreathe, Slumber
