“Oh, I’m ready. Never been so sure or quite so steady. I’m gonna live my life to keep the promises I made even though I make mistakes. I know I’m ready. I found a heart that was just like mine…” – Emily Hearn, Found a Heart⠀
“How do you know?”
Before I met Clay it was often a question I pondered. How would I know when I had found the man I was to marry? How do you know? How can one be sure?
Marriage is a huge commitment. And for me, as a believer, I knew it was one that would be a one-time decision. And so it was a big one. And so it was one I knew I wouldn’t take lightly. I knew I would have to be sure.⠀
So how did I know?⠀
- Clay wasn’t just like me. (In fact he was quite my opposite!) But he had a heart that was just like mine—a heart that longed to serve and honor the Lord in a dating relationship, in a future marriage and with his whole life. I knew I could trust his future decisions and actions because I knew I could trust his heart.
- We shared a foundation of strong relationship with the Lord upon which we could build our relationship and lives together. I knew that whatever may come our way—sunshine or storms—the life we would build together on that foundation would stand.
Sure I was incredibly attracted to him. Sure we enjoyed each other’s company. Sure he made my heart beat fast and gave me butterflies in my stomach. But you know what? Lots of guys would be able to do that. Few would have the heart and foundation to make a lasting commitment.⠀
If you’re dating someone and wondering how you will know if they’re “the one,” I hope these two things will help shine a light on the answer to that age-old question, “How do you know?”⠀
“But seek first His Kingdom and righteousness and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
